Memory Care

Losing your memory piece by piece is horrible, but unfortunately, a majority of the older population suffers from dementia and memory loss.  It is a normal part of growing older and aging. When memory loss and dementia become an issue, it is often time to consider an assisted living home as an alternative living arrangement.  And although it is difficult for some family members to consider the option of moving their loved ones to a home of any kind, an assisted living home provides the most home-like environment of all options available, and is a much less-intrusive and more private type of setting than a nursing home, which can be almost like a hospital and affords no privacy or autonomy.

Most family members do not have the training to care for someone that is slowly losing their memory. As a matter of fact most people, regardless of how good their intentions, cannot provide the care that is needed for someone that is losing their ability to remember. And living alone is not an option when extreme memory loss or dementia is present because the sufferer poses a risk to themselves should they forget to take their medication, take too much medication, or should they forget that a pot is brewing on the stove – or any of a number of different scenarios that can and do happen all the time to those who have trouble remembering. Specialized supervision and medication management that can be provided by an assisted living home is a great option that allows the person to retain much of their independence and dignity while still being safe.

Assisted Living Homes

Assisted living homes can provide specialized care for folks that have memory issues. These homes are geared toward providing care to individuals that allows the individuals to remain as independent as possible.

Memory care is one of the top reasons why folks seek out residency in an assisted living home. The staff is highly trained to cope with the fallouts from the infliction. They are well trained and well versed in rehabilitative techniques and ways to improve memory retention.

Medication Supervision

In many cases an individual that is suffering through memory lose for whatever reason is prescribed medication by their physician. The medication is taken following a strict regime. It is important for the medication to be taken exactly as directed for it to be effective. Assisted living homes provide the medication supervision that is necessary to insure that the medication is taken exactly as prescribed. Sometimes the medication that is prescribed is prescribed to be taken around the clock which includes the middle of the night as well. Getting up all hours of the night might be very difficult for an at home care giver, like a family member, but assisted living homes have staff members that are there twenty four hours a day to make sure that the residents are taking care of.

An Opportunity to Make New Memories

As horrible as it is to lose memories, the pain and the struggle can be alleviated by getting out and being with folks that are in a similar situation. Assisted living homes focus on the quality of life, and make sure the residents are not just left to linger away. There are activities that can be quite therapeutic. Living in an environment where you are encouraged to live as independently as possible can be an ideal setting for memory care.
